The Open Source
Nicholas Petreley

Nick's misty farewell

IT'S HARD TO believe that I've been writing for InfoWorld since 1984. I got my start by writing a review of the database rapid application development environment called Clarion. The company promptly pulled its ads out of InfoWorld due to my complaints. Michael "Mac" McCarthy, the reviews editor at the time, stood behind every word. So the folks at Clarion swallowed their pride, fixed the product, and began advertising again.

That was my introduction to InfoWorld's powerful influence as an advocate for readers. You may not know it, but InfoWorld is responsible for many benefits you now enjoy. It led the fight to remove copy protection from productivity applications. Countless companies have fixed problems and improved performance due to our real-world benchmarks.

I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities given to me by InfoWorld to play different roles in that process. After serving as lead database reviewer for a number of years, I joined full time in 1990 as a test development specialist. I designed and coded many of the benchmarks that forced companies to create what they internally referred to as "InfoWorld updates" to address the problems we uncovered.

Then Ed Foster put me in charge of the new Enterprise Team, which launched my first column, Down to the Wire. Shortly thereafter, I graduated to executive editor of reviews and testing. Thanks to your enthusiastic response, then-Editor in Chief Sandy Reed moved the column to the coveted back page. But my restless nature took over. I left InfoWorld to run one Webzine, create another, and do Caldera-sponsored nonprofit work on Linux. Thanks to Sandy, Michael Vizard, and especially you for keeping the column popular, InfoWorld continued to provide me with a voice through it all. But now that I've returned to freelancing, my rambling spirit has called for a change.

Aside from God, who makes all things possible, I owe countless people more than I could ever repay for my years of success and fun here. A few are: Lauren Black, Greg Smith, Pat McGovern, Jonathan Sacks, Stewart Alsop, Charlotte Zeims, Michael Lowe, Nancy Durlester, Steve Irvin, Carla Thornton, Dan Sommer, Carla Newman, Jason Pontin, Scott Mace, Kristin Kueter, Jessica Davis, Jai Singh, Jo Pirnik, Bob Metcalfe, Kevin Strehlo, and Michelle Zelsman. Ed Foster deserves a second mention for his support during tough times. And extra special thanks go to Michael McCarthy, who virtually taught me how to write, knew how to encourage me when I succeeded, and graciously rewrote reams of garbage when I failed.

But you readers -- fans and critics alike -- kept me from sleeping on the park bench by night and pacing the streets yelling obscenities by day. Or worse, running Windows. I deeply appreciate your loyalty and e-mails -- kudos, flames, and everything in between. I invite you to visit the new home for my weekly column, InfoWorld' s sister publication Computerworld (www.computerworld.com). And you can always find me at VarLinux.org.
